Jonathon Rodney (Sugababes, Skepta, Tiggs Da Author) - Interview

Bro, how’s life? We speak a lot but for those who don’t know Jonathon is one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. We first met at the London Drum Show, that was a massive weekend for you right?

Yes bro man life is good, staying safe, trying to stay creative as much as I can. Wow London Drum show still feels like yesterday. Crazy how that was when we met, I feel like I've known you for ever lol. Definitely a massive weekend for me, never in my life thought I'd do something like that, definitely a highlight in life.

When did you start drumming ? How did you discover drumming?

Ok so my Mom tells me from soon as I could sit up I was hitting on things lol but I think I started at the age of 5 years old started watching guys like Oakland Riley, The brothers Patrick and Rowan Spence growing up in church. But really discovered that actually I can do this bout 13/14 years old now I’m seeing guys like Donovan Hepburn, Julian Chambers, Ray Prince, Ricky Prince, Bunny and much more for localUK guys changed the game for me they opened my eye to Omar Hakim, Dennis Chambers, my absolute favourite Gerald Hayward hearing them guys just turned me mad so yeah that’s kinda how and when I discovered drumming.

How are you keeping yourself busy during these strange times?

Yeah trying to go on jogs and doing fitness stuff and enjoying the family time man but also been producing my own music thinking about bringing out a EP or something we shall see maybe lol but also just been recording on a few projects for other artists.

Let’s talk a bit about your projects. Who are you currently working with? Who have you worked with in the past?

Sure, I started off with a group from London called BKS (Best Kept Secret) worked with Siani, Sugababes, Tiggs da Author, Sway, Kano, Skepta, MK1, Shopè, Priime, Saga now currently working with X Factor artist Relley C, Lekky, Crossfya and doing a theatre show with the Whitney Houston experience.

You are a British Drum Company artist, tell me about your Kit?

I sure am bro. I use a Buckingham Scarlett Satin Oil finish Legend series kit with a 14x5 bluebird Snare Drum 22” Kick 8” 10” 12” 14” 16” Tom’s love these drums so warm easy to tune sounds great no matter what heads you use (Remo forever lol) but yeah great drums to play it feels like home when your sat behind a BDC kit amazing drums and amazing staff and team too.

Finally, can you share a quick tip or give us a small exercise you always use?

To be honest I don’t do much I make sure before playing I warm up do a few singles and doubles on a drum pad and stretch very important to stretch stops your body from aches and pains while playing so just do things like touching toes twisting and turning like your normal every things tiring your head left and right just to warm yourself up before playing.

Appreciate you my brother!
